Abstract

Coffee is an important agricultural commodity as well as the main source of livelihood for the community in Nglambur Hamlet, Sidoharjo Village, Samigaluh District, Kulon Progo Regency, where independent (swadaya) Arabica and Robusta coffee farming has developed, yet comprehensive studies comparing the economic performance of the two have been limited. This study aims to analyze the comparison between independent Arabica and Robusta coffee farming and to identify the main factors influencing the income difference between them. The study used a quantitative descriptive method with 60 respondents, consisting of 30 Arabica farmers and 30 Robusta farmers, through interviews, observation, record-keeping, questionnaires, and documentation, analyzed using income analysis, farm efficiency analysis, and an independent samples t-test. The results show that Robusta productivity reached 784.4 kg/ha/year, higher than Arabica's 496.8 kg/ha/year, so that Robusta income reached IDR 38,998,082/ha/year compared to Arabica's IDR 26,083,699/ha/year, with a difference of IDR 12,914,383/ha/year that was proven significant through the t-test (t = -2.943; p = 0.0047). The selling price of Arabica (IDR 70,500/kg) was higher than Robusta (IDR 60,500/kg), but was not yet able to offset the productivity gap. Both farming systems are feasible to operate, with an R/C ratio of 3.9 for Arabica and 5.6 for Robusta, and a B/C ratio of 2.9 and 4.6, respectively. This study concludes that plant productivity, selling price, revenue, and production costs are the main factors that differentiate the income of independent Arabica and Robusta coffee farming in the study area.
