Abstract

Brake pad is one of the components that support safety in motor vehicle
features, in the manufacture of raw materials for brake pad as fillers and
reinforcement can be obtained from asbestos or non-asbestos. Non-asbestos brake
pads use natural fibers as reinforcement and filler, for example cellulose fiber from
oil palm empty bunches. Cellulose fiber from OPEFB was obtained by isolating
cellulose through the delignification method using 5% NaOH solution. This
research was conducted to determine the effect of raw material size (80 Mesh, 100
Mesh, 120 Mesh, and 140 Mesh) and sintering time (2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours, and
5 hours) on brake pad products. Brake pad is made by casting and compressing
methods. The result of this research obtained that the best brake pad is the variation
of the raw material size of 120 mesh and the sintering time of 4 hours, with the
result of the hardness vickers of 35.03 and the result of the water absorption of
11.72%. Brake pads from this study cannot be used directly on vehicles because of
the need for a brake pad manufacturing process and standardization of quality
standards for raw materials classified as ASTM (American Society for Testing and
Materials).
